Services, service areas, scheduling and lawn care in Southwest Ohio.
Services
What services does Barefoot Landscaping offer?
We offer turf mowing and maintenance, turf management, landscape bed design and install, and mulch installation. Turf management covers aeration, overseeding, a fertilization program and a weed management program. We also handle spring and fall cleanup. See turf management for the lawn-health side of our work.
Do you work with commercial properties?
Yes. We serve both residential and commercial properties in Liberty Township, Monroe and West Chester. Property managers may find our guide on what to expect from a grounds program helpful.
Do you offer spring and fall cleanup?
Yes. Seasonal cleanups get beds and turf ready for the growing season and for winter. Our fall cleanup checklist shows how fall work sets up your lawn for next spring.
How does your weed management program handle crabgrass?
Pre-emergent crabgrass control is timed to spring soil warming, usually when soil reaches about 55°F, around forsythia bloom. Most pre-emergents also block grass seed from germinating, so weed control has to be planned around any seeding. It's part of our turf management service.
Lawn care
How high should my lawn be mowed?
Tall fescue does best at 2.5 to 4 inches. Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and fine fescue do best at 2 to 4 inches, typically 2.5 to 3. Never remove more than one-third of the blade at a time, and mow higher in summer and in shade. Our mowing height guide explains why.
Should grass clippings be bagged?
No. Leaving clippings on the lawn returns nutrients to the soil, and clippings do not cause thatch.
When is the best time to aerate and overseed?
For cool-season lawns, late August through September is best. Core aeration relieves compaction, and seed sown then faces less weed competition than spring seeding. Learn more in When to Aerate and Overseed in Southwest Ohio.
Why does my lawn turn brown in the middle of summer?
Cool-season grass may go dormant in Ohio summer heat and drought, so keep traffic on it to a minimum. Lawns mowed too short have shallow roots and suffer more, which is why mowing height should go up during summer stress.
When should my lawn be fertilized?
The most important feedings for cool-season lawns are in September and late fall around November, before dormancy. Avoid summer feeding because it increases disease. A light spring feeding is optional. See our fertilization schedule.
Can I seed in spring and still use crabgrass preventer?
Usually not. Most pre-emergents also block grass seed from germinating, so the two work against each other. Mesotrione is the exception. That's one reason late summer and early fall is the better time to seed.
Landscape beds & mulch
How deep should mulch be?
Hardwood bark mulch should be 2 to 3 inches deep, with mulch rings around trees as wide as practical. Pull mulch away from trunk flares. Mulch volcanoes cause stem-girdling roots, moisture problems and decay. See How Deep Should Mulch Be?
Why does mulch need to be refreshed?
Mulch breaks down as it decays, which is part of how it builds soil structure. That means it needs periodic refreshing to keep suppressing weeds and conserving moisture. Our guide on when to mulch covers spring and fall timing.
Can you design new beds or redo tired ones?
Yes. We design and install new landscape beds and rework beds that have outgrown their space or never quite worked. Learn more about landscape bed design and install.
Why do my beds dry out and crack?
Bare clay soil cracks and swings between wet and dry. Organic matter and mulch help moderate soil temperature, conserve moisture and build soil structure. Read Building Landscape Beds That Thrive in Southwest Ohio Clay.
